Abstract
865,360. Electric coils. WOOD, M. F. April 10, 1959 [April 10, 1958], No. 11455/58. Class 35. A toroidal solenoid, for producing a magnetic field parallel to its circular axis or for storing energy magnetically, comprises a number of separate coils 1, each tapered in thickness as shown, assembled around a torus tube 2. The coils are wound from copper strip at least as wide as each coil at its periphery, and interleaved with an insulating film or coated with an insulating lacquer. They are then impregnated with a thermosetting resin and the sides machines to produce the required taper. The ends of each coil are connected to containing bands 3, 4 of brass, bronze or stainless steel, and the coils are connected in series by interconnecting these bands in pairs, the inner ones 3 by metal sleeves 12 and the outers by links via terminals 13. Alternate coils are wound in opposite senses so that the direction of current flow is uniform throughout the solenoid. It is mentioned that the coils may alternatively be connected singly or in groups in series or parallel. Surrounding the outer band is a casing 5 of glass-reinforced thermosetting resin in which are transverse coolant tubes connected to outlets 7 and inlets (not shown). Each casing projects beyond the coil on one side so that on assembly the coils are spaced apart. The space is sealed by 0- rings 9, 10 and provides a space for coolant, e.g. air, water or an insulating organic liquid. Strips of a synthetic material (11, Fig. 2, not shown) direct the flow.
