Abstract
An azeotrope consisting of methanol and trimethyl borate, or ethanol and triethyl borate, is resolved by feeding boric oxide, metaboric acid or mesoboric acid to a reaction vessel, and feeding said azeotrope to said vessel, and heating, so that a reaction takes place producing a boric acid and additional ester. The reaction product from said vessel may be distilled to separate the azeotrope and additional ester, the azeotrope and still bottoms from the distillation being recycled to the said vessel. Boric acid is recovered from the vessel as a solid phase and may be reacted with further methanol to form azeotrope. When the methanol-methyl borate azeotrope is being resolved, additional methanol may be added to the vessel. The process may be effected on a batchwise or continuous basis.
