Class 82(1) A multiple retort furnace for the production of zinc has a series of condensers in which are obtained fractions of successively increasing purity with respect to materials having a higher boiling point than that of zinc. The first condenser is common to a number of retorts 1 (Fig. 1), one of its walls being formed by the front wall of the furnace, and a second wall 4 parallel to it consisting of refractory material in a steel frame, being removable to provide access to the furnace. Associated with wall 4 is a second panel 5 of heat insulating material, the distance between them being variable to control the amount of zinc collecting in the condenser. Vapour leaving the first condenser passes to a second condenser 11, the carryover of drops of impure zinc being avoided by subjecting the vapour to centrifugal action by device 7, whereby drops of liquid are flung against the wall 9, where they coalesce and flow into channel 6. Gas leaving condenser 11 passes through a similar centrifugal device 13 and then to a third condenser or to a cooling tower 16 where final traces of zinc are removed. The refractory material of wall 4 may consist of a mixture of coke or graphite with refractory clay or refractory cement, and may be rendered impervious to zinc vapour by coating with a glaze of borax with dextrin or organic glue and refractory clay. Wall 4 may also incorporate a sheet of refractory steel coated with mica or asbestos attached by sodium silicate. Construction of this wall is such that the metal frame is protected from direct exposure to radiation and to zinc vapour; the frame is hollow and cooled by the passage of air or high boiling liquid. A protective coating for all other surfaces in contact with the zinc and carbon monoxide which prevents the accretions of zinc oxide from adhering strongly consists of a carbonaceous material with organic glue.
