Abstract
863,338. Grinding gears. BROWN INDUSTRIES Ltd., D. Nov. 27, 1959 [Nov. 27, 1958], No. 38304/58. Class 60. [Also in Group XXII] A machine for producing helical gears comprises a differential gear 25 in a drive for rotating a work-table 15, and means 32 for retarding or advancing the movement of one member 26 of the gear to vary the rotational speed of the table as a grinding, milling or planing tool 10 is reciprocated by an adjustable crank 20 so that the tool follows a substantially true helical path. The rack 32 is moved by a crank 33 rotating at twice the speed of the crank 20. The rack and crank are connected by a rod 37, a block 38 adjustable on a swinging arm 39, and a pivoted bracket 40. A roller 41 on the arm 39 engages a cam 42 reciprocated by a crank disc 34 rotating at the same speed as the crank 20. The effect of the cam 42 is varied by adjusting the block 38. The resulting non-uniform motion of the worktable compensates for the harmonic variations in the tool speed. Over-compensation may be provided to produce a modified helical tooth and to make allowances for known errors in the machine transmission.
