Abstract

863,095. Preserving meat and poultry. ARMOUR & CO. April 8, 1959 [April 28, 1958], No. 11899/59. Class 49. Packages of meat and poultry comprise a material which absorbs meat and poultry juices, and in which is incorporated a bacteriostatic agent, and a perforated barrier of non-absorptive, moisture-impervious material between the meat or poultry and the absorbent material. In Fig. 3, the absorbent material 16 is placed in a tray 15, on the absorbent material is a moisture-impervious plate 17 having perforations 18, on the perforated plate is poultry, and the whole is enclosed in a wrapping 21 of transparent, moisture-impervious material. The absorbent material is exemplified by rag paper, cellulose sponge, blotting paper, natural sponge, silica gel, gelatine, karaya gum, agar, carragheen. The bacteriostatic agent is exemplified by a dialkyl dimethyl ammonium chloride in which the alkyl groups are those of coconut oil, chlorotetracycline, sorbic acid, sodium hypochlorite, tetrachlorophenol. Base-plates may be of chip board, pulp, aluminium or plastic. Transparent wrappers may be of cellulose, rubber hydrochloride, a polyester, polyvinylidene chloride.
