Abstract

862,948. Valves. NEW YORK AIR BRAKE CO. July 9, 1959 [Aug. 27, 1958], No. 23593/59. Class 135. A two-way pressure-relief valve comprises a housing 11, a valve bore 16 in the housing, two longitudinally-spaced pressure-chambers 19, 21 intersecting the bore; a reciprocable piston 22 located in the bore between the two chambers 19, 21, the opposite ends 23, 24 of the piston being subject to the pressures in the two chambers 19, 21; an axial bore 25 extending through the piston, valve seats 26, 27, one at each end of the axial bore; two reciprocable valve members 28, 29 guided in the valve bore on opposite sides of the piston and each biased by a spring into engagement with one of the seats; stops 35, 36 for limiting the movement of the piston and the valve members, the stops being so arranged that when the piston has reached the limit of its travel in the direction of either valve member the other valve member is unseated. The ends of the bore 16 are closed by threaded plugs 17, 18. The stops 35, 36 are formed by split-rings located in annular grooves in the bore 16. Each chamber 19, 21 has an inlet and an outlet 12, 14 and 13, 15, respectively. When the pressure in chamber 19 rises above that in chamber 21 the piston 22 moves to the right against the stop 36, the seat 26 leaving the valve member 28. Fluid pressure now acts on the member 29 and is relieved by movement of said member. A similar relief action occurs if the pressure in the chamber 21 rises above that in the chamber 19.
