Abstract

862,627. Hydro-mechanical variable-speed gears. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Feb. 27, 1959 [March 14, 1958], No. 6893/59. Class 80 (2). In a combined torque converter and planet gear between an input shaft 10 and an output shaft 12 driving rear axle gearing 14, which converter comprises an impeller 20, a turbine 22 and a reactor 24 reacting on a one-way detent 26 braked at 44, long planets 32 in an output carrier 30 mesh a ring gear 34 connected to the turbine 22 and equal suns 38, 36 which latter sun reacts, for forward reduced drive through the converter, on a one-way detect 40 also braked at 44, and a fluid coupling 48, 50, as shown, or a disc friction clutch (Fig. 2, not shown) is filled, or engaged, at will, before, at, or after converter coupling point, to connect the input shaft 10 to the sun 38 for split torque drive approaching 1/1 ratio, the one-way detect 40 permitting forward rotation of the sun 36. For reverse, the turbine 22 and ring 34 are braked at 52, a clutch 56 between the detent 26 and the sun 36 is engaged, the brake 44 is released, and the fluid coupling 48, 50 or clutch is emptied or disengaged, so that the reactor 24 rotates reversely and drives the released sun 36 through the detent 26 and the clutch 56. For vehicle braking the fluid coupling 48, 50 is filled and the brake 44 and clutch 56 are engaged, thereby locking suns 36, 38 and the fluid coupling turbine 50. Hydrodynamic braking then occurs between the converter turbine 22, which is overdriven, through the ring gear 34, by the carrier 30, and the impeller 20 which latter, with the engine, is slowed by hydrodynamic braking between the fluid coupling impeller 48 and the locked turbine 50. The one-way detents may be of the sprag or roller type. The brakes may be disc, band or, as shown, cone type. Pressure fluid for the hydraulic components and control system may be supplied by an input driven pump 58. Specification 846,243 is referred to.
