Abstract

862,351. Tube couplings. K. A. C. Ltd. Dec. 17, 1959 [Jan. 28, 1959], No. 3091/59. Class 99(1). An end fitting for corrugated metal tubing 2 of the kind having a plain cylindrical end portion 8 and a transition section 3 between that portion and the uniformly corrugated body of the tubing and having corrugations which gradually decrease in amplitude as shown, compprises an annular sleeve 1 provided with a tapered bore portion to conform at least approximately to the envelope of the section 3, an intermediate bore portion to engage part of the length of the end portion of the tubing, and a bore portion divergent to provide a surface inclined to the axis of the sleeve against which the terminal part of the end portion of the tubing may be deformed and trapped by a tubular spigot 10 having an intermediate portion 14 of the outer surface thereof shaped to be complementary to the divergent bore portion of the sleeve. Means are included for securing the sleeve and spigot against relative axial movement to release the tubing. As shown, the spigot is provided with an annular shoulder 15 forming an abutment for a ring nut 12 screwed into the sleeve to draw the sleeve axially along the spigot and the sleeve has an annular groove 6 into which the end portion 8 is deformed, e.g. by spinning. The braided metal reinforcement 17 of the tubing is trapped between a ring 18 having a tapered bore 20 complementary to the tapered outer surface 19 of the sleeve and drawn axially into reinforcement-retaining position by a ring nut 22 ; all the components of the end fitting are locked against relative rotation by a locking screw 24. In modified forms, the spigot and sleeve may be secured together by complementary screw threads, and the ring 18 may be swaged down on to an end portion of the reinforcement overlying part of the length of the sleeve.
