Signals corresponding to the binary representation of a number are applied to a parity bit generator comprising a number of comparator circuits arranged in tree formation so as to have an output according to whether the number is odd or even. The output can be used where necessary to provide a "parity bit," or in dealing with a full parity-bit code can be used to detect an error. Fig. 1 shows an example using PNP transistors for computing the parity bit to be added to a 7-bit code to ensure that the number of 1's in the code shall always be odd, the necessary output being then taken at 49 from inverter 48. Alternatively, if the code is to be even the output is taken at 47. The circuit is made up of a number of two-transistor comparators of the type described in Specification 844,966 in which like inputs produce a low-voltage output, whereas unlike inputs produce a highvoltage output. The circuit can be modified to have eight inputs when it acts as a check on the odd or even parity code, an error bringing up an alarm.
