Abstract

862,174. Gripping-devices for handling articles. ROLLS-ROYCE Ltd. June 12, 1958 [June 24, 1957], No. 19888/57. Class 78 (4). [Also in Groups XII and XXV] A device, which may be used for handling or controlling objects in a furnace 13 contained in an evacuated chamber 10, comprises a supportmember 17 slidably and rotatably mounted in a bush 19 in the chamber wall, and handling members, 15 16 formed as bi-metallic strips which move together to grip the object on being heated by coils 22, 23 connected in parallel to a switch 26 and terminals 27. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), additional oppositely-acting bimetallic strips are linked to the handling members, and are heated by further coils to positively separate the handling members to disengage the load. The heating coils are omitted in a further embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), the heat of the furnace moving the handling members to grip the load which is automatically released on being removed from the furnace. A further embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown), provides a bi-metallic hook in place of the handling members, which may be heated by a coil to bend the hook to a position in which it engages the object. The devices may be heat-insulated so as only to be affected by their heating coils, and the insulation may include channels for the flow of coolant.
