Abstract
862,072. Railway vehicle transitional type couplings. FISCHER A.G., G. Oct. 24, 1958 [Nov. 4, 1957], No. 34206/58. Class 103(5). A transitional type coupling comprises an automatic head 1 pivoted at 3 to a hook 2, a support 4 integral with or secured to the head 1 and carrying a cap 5 adapted to fit on the point of the hook to support the weight of the head, and release means whereby the cap may be disengaged and the head lowered to disclose the hook. A bolt 8 has a head 7 which is held seated in a tail 6 of the cap 5 by a compression spring 13, which spring bears against a triangular section block 12 co-operating with the support 4 to centralise the cap 5, and the head 1 when coupled to a similar head. When it is desired to bring the head 1 into its inoperative position a handle 17 is turned from its dotted position in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 4, so that the nose of a cam 20 engages the top of the support 4 and slightly lifts the tail 6 of the cap 5 and the bolt 8 against the spring 13. The end of the head 1 is then lifted so that the lip 23 of the cap 5 is moved upwardly clear of the hook and the cap is turned anti-clockwise by the spring about the nose of the cam 20 acting as fulcrum. The head is then lowered to the Fig. 5 position where the weight of the handle 17 moves the cam back to its original position, and a reinforcing web 25 on the head portion prevents the chain or other draw gear from moving out of the hook 2.
