Abstract

Substantially insoluble, infusible resin compositions are produced by subjecting to high-energy ionizing radiation a mixture of a polyepoxide and a thermoplastic polymer of the type which is normally degraded by ionizing radiation. Suitable polyepoxides are epoxidized oils, e.g. epoxidized safflower seed, soyabean, or linseed oil. Bisphenol epihalohydrin type condensates may also be used. Thermoplastic polymers mentioned are polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride and cellulose nitrate. Types of radiation which may be employed are high-energy electrons, X-rays, or g -rays. In the example, compositions of polyvinyl chloride, stabilizer, lubricant and epoxidized soyabean oil were formed into sheets and irradiated with electrons. Compared with similar sheets having dioctyl phthalate or epoxidized acetylated monoglyceride of lard oil in place of the epoxidized soya bean oil, the sheets showed higher melting-point and increased stiffness indicative of cross-linking. If desired, some flexibility may be maintained in spite of the cross-linking by adding plasticizers, e.g. for vinyl resins, dioctyl phthalate, tricresyl phosphate, or di-isooctyl adipate. Fillers, pigments and other inert materials may also be added. Different faces of an object may be successively irradiated to aid penetration of the radiation.
