Abstract

The reactivity of magnesia is improved by contacting the magnesia with an aqueous solution of an alkali-metal hydroxide at elevated temperature, and then washing the treated magnesia. The solution preferably contains 5-10% by weight of the hydroxide, and the treatment therewith preferably lasts 2-25 hours and the temperature is preferably above 75 DEG C., especially at the boiling point of the solution. The magnesia may be a crude magnesia such as dead-burnt magnesia or that obtained by the pyrolysis of magnesium chloride hydrates, and prior to the treatment water-soluble impurities may be leached out by water or a dilute alkali metal hydroxide solution, which latter may be filtrate recycled from the subsequent magnesia treatment. The washed treated magnesia may be dried and calcined, for example at 550-750 DEG C.
