Abstract

Aromatic nitriles having a halogen atom substituted in each position ortho to the cyano group are prepared by heating the corresponding 0:01 - dinitrocyano - or 0 - halo - 01 - nitrocyano-aromatic compound with chlorine or thionyl chloride at a temperature of at least 180 DEG C., preferably 200 DEG to 300 DEG C. In examples: (1) 2 - chloro - 6 - nitrobenzonitrile is melted and chlorine passed through the liquid, or heated with thionyl chloride, to give 2 : 6-dichlorobenzonitrile; (2) 2:6-dinitrobenzonitrile is heated and chlorine passed through to give 2 : 6-dichlorobenzonitrile.
