861,789. Valves. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. April 10, 1957 [April 30, 1956], No. 15115/60. Divided out of 861,788. Class 135. [Also in Group XXIV] A timing valve 80 for causing gradual increase of fluid pressure in a line 67 for engaging a friction clutch, see Group XXIV, comprises a piston 82 subject to upward piessure from the clutchapply line 67, and to downward pressure of a spring 88 and also by the same clutch-apply pressure 67 reaching the upper face of the piston through a restrictor 95, which delays downward pressure, permitting the piston 82 initially to rise and exhaust the clutch-apply line 67 at 91, such exhaust being gradually cut off by build up of clutch pressure above the piston. Thus, when pressure is applied to the line 67 to engage the clutch by a control valve (see Group XXIV), the clutch engages gradually. When the control valve exhausts the line 67 for clutch release, fluid pressure is rapidly exhausted from above the piston through a check-valve 94 by passing the restrictor 95, and clutch release is rapid.
