Abstract

In an aerobic fermentation process in which a culture of a micro-organism is added to a nutrient medium, the nutrient medium is first sterilized by the addition of hydrogen peroxide, catalase is then added to the medium and finally a culture of the micro-organism and the fermentation proceeds under conditions suitable for the growth of the micro-organism, additional hydrogen peroxide being added continuously throughout the fermentation to provide oxygen for the micro-organism. Further nutrient medium sterilized with hydrogen peroxide may be added to the broth as fermentation proceeds. The process may be employed in the production of (a) vitamins such as B12 and riboflavin; (b) antibiotics such as penicillin, streptomycin, tetracyclines e.g. chlortetracycline and oxytetracycline, and bacitracin; (c) citric acid; and (d) oxygenation of steroids, particularly p 11-dehydrocorticosterone to cortisone and progesterone to 11-hydroxyprogesterone.ALSO:In an aerobic fermentation process in which a culture of a microorganism is added to a nutrient medium, the nutrient medium is first sterilized by the addition of hydrogen peroxide, catalose is then added to the medium and finally a culture of the microorganism and the fermentation proceeds under conditions suitable for the growth of the microorganism, additional hydrogen peroxide being added continuously throughout the fermentation to provide oxygen for the microorganism. Further nutrient medium sterilized with hydrogen peroxide may be added to the broth as fermentation proceeds. The process may be employed for the fermentation of organisms for the production of yeast, vitamins such as B12 and riboflavin, citric acid and antibiotics such as penicillin, streptomycin, tetracyclines, e.g. chlortetracyclic and oxytetracycline and bacitracins, and for the oxygenation of steroids. In the production of yeast, using Saccharomyces cereviscal or Torula utilis hydrogen peroxide is added initially in the amount of 0.2 to 1% and thereafter at the rate of 0.66 grams. per litre per hour.
