Abstract

861,733. Tower cranes. ETABLISSEMENTS F. POTAIN ET CIE. July 10, 1959 [July 11, 1958], No. 23736/59. Class 78 (4). In a tower crane the means for raising the tower or a portion of the tower comprises a lifting member carried by but displaceable relatively to the tower or tower portion, a series of abutments at spaced intervals along the length of the tower for successive engagement by the lifting member, and a latch member adapted to co-operate with the abutments so as to support the tower or tower portion when the lifting member is disengaged from one of the abutments preparatory to being engaged with another of the abutments. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the tower comprises a main portion formed by elements 1 mounted on one another, and a head portion 2 supporting the horizontal jib (not shown) and slidable on the main portion. The head portion carries a rail 3 and is open at one side so that an additional frame element may be lifted along the tower e.g. by the crane itself, suspended from a carriage on the rail and introduced into the head portion above the topmost element 1 and fixed thereto. For lifting the head portion up the tower, each element 1 is provided with blocks 5 having notches for receiving fingers 9 on the lower end of the piston-rod 8 of a piston-andcylinder unit 7 which is hingedly mounted at 8 on the head portion 2. This portion is normally supported by a latch 10 also pivoted at 6 to the portion 2, engaging the uppermost block 5 on the top element 1. When the element 4 has been fixed in position, the head portion 2 is raised by contracting the unit 7 and engaging its fingers 9 with the next set of blocks 5, and then extending the unit 7 a distance greater than the distance between successive blocks whereby the latch 10 rises just above the next block. The latch is then engaged with this block by contracting the unit 7. In Figs. 5, 9, a relatively small tower 14 extends through the floors of the building being erected and is raised as a whole as the erection of the building proceeds. The tower is guided by rollers 17 each mounted on transverse members 16b of a rectangular frame 16 secured on each floor, and is supported vertically by pawls 20 engaging pairs of blocks 19 arranged equidistantly on one side of the tower. These pawls are carried by a shaft 21 rotatably supported by the members 16b. The tower is raised by a piston-andcylinder unit 22 mounted on a member 16b. The unit is first contracted and the ends of its beam 24 are disposed below a pair of blocks 19, and is then extended so that the ends of its beam are engaged in the lower notches of this pair of blocks. Further extension is then effected until the pawls 20 come below the next lower pair of blocks beneath the pair they first engaged and engage the lower notches of this pair.
