861,329. Nuclear fuel elements. A.E.I.-J. THOMPSON NUCLEAR ENERGY CO. Ltd. July 10, 1959 [July 14, 1958], No. 22504/58. Class 39(4). In a nuclear reactor fuel element support assembly each element is hung vertically from the upper end to permit downward expansion and to prevent bowing. As shown, the elements 2 are arranged in two concentric circles round vertical pillar 1 and are hung freely from upper spider 3 by spindles 11 and collars 12. The element lower ends are located at lower spider 13 by the spindles 17 and are clear of the upper face of 13 to permit downward expansion. Pillar 1 is of graphite, the spiders of zirconium alloy and the element sheathing is beryllium. The assemblies may be stacked vertically by the engagement of the spigot 18 with the corresponding recess 20 of the lower assembly. Specification 861,222 is referred to.
