Abstract

<PICT:0861078/III/1> <PICT:0861078/III/2> The sump of an engine (e.g. an internal-combustion engine) is provided with a hollow draining plug made of non-magnetic material and having a frictionally-held bar magnet 1 projecting from the open end of the hollow. Particles of metal in the lubricating oil are attracted to the magnet and thus their circulation with the oil to the bearings and other working parts of the engine is prevented. In preferred embodiments, (i) an auxiliary plug is screwed into a tapped hole 4 in the bottom of the plug 2 (Figs. 1 and 3), (ii) the floor 6 of the hollow is recessed (Fig. 1), and (iii) openings 7 are cut in that part of the cylindrical wall of the plug which projects into the sump (Fig. 3).
