Abstract

860,795. Wafer sandwich making machines. BAKER PERKINS Ltd. May 20, 1959 [May 27, 1958], No. 16912/58. Addition to 785,435. Class 28 (1). A wafer or like sandwich-making machine comprises a continuously-travelling conveyer mechanism with an upper infeed section whose delivery end is periodically retracted to deposit creamed wafer sheets, arrested in succession by the upper part of a stop mechanism, on a lower conveyer section, which it overlaps, and where the wafers are held by the lower portion of the stop-mechanism until a completed sandwich is formed in which a dry wafer sheet is incorporated as the top layer, the lower stop-portion being then withdrawn to allow the sandwich to proceed on the lower conveyer section. Wafer sheets are marshalled as described in Specification 785,434 and the dry wafer sheets are fed in succession by a conveyer 10 to trays 11 supporting the ends of a sheet 12, which is arrested there by fingers 13. Creamed wafer sheets 14 are fed in succession, spaced uniformly, creamed surface uppermost, to the stop-fingers 13 by a conveyer belt 15 passing round a roller 17 mounted on a carriage 18 which is then retracted by a cam 19 to remove the support of the belt 15. The wafer sheet drops on to a conveyer 20 and is arrested by a stop 21 vertically aligned with stop-fingers 13. Conveyer 20 is formed by three V-belts between which stop 21 fits upwardly. Carriage 18 is retracted twice more and just before the second time a dry wafer is deposited on the creamed wafer engaging fingers 13. After the wafer sandwich is completed, stop 21 is lowered and conveyer 20 carries the sandwich under a presser unit. Conveyer 10 is driven by a chain 100 from a drive-shaft 101 driven from the marshalling unit and carrying a gear 102 meshing with a gear 123 on a main cam-shaft 23 carrying cam 19. Conveyers 15, 20 are driven through chains and gearing from shaft 23 through gearing drives shaft 32 at onethird of its own speed. Trays 11 and stop 21 are actuated respectively by cams 30, 31 on subsidiary cam-shaft 32. If four creamed wafer sheets are to be incorporated in a sandwich, shaft 32 revolves at one-quarter of the speed of shaft 23. Conveyers 15 and 20 may be replaced by a single conveyer, Fig. 4 (not shown).
