Abstract

860,532. Aerials. DIGBY, H. A. Dec. 20, 1957 [Sept. 27, 1956], No. 29543/56. Class 40 (7). An aerial for the reception of signals in two bands of frequencies consists of two circular and parallel loops of conductive tubing. One of the loops 1 has a narrow gap 3 in it aligned with a similar gap 4 in the other loop 2 and the loops are joined by parallel conductive links 6, 7 running between corresponding ends of the loops. The loop 2 is also provided with a second gap 5 diametrically opposite the gap 4 to the two sides of which the aerial feeder 8 is connected. The circumference of the loops is made such that the overall length of the aerial elements is an odd number of half-wavelengths at a frequency in the higher frequency band and also such that the aerial can be tuned to be a half or quarter-wave dipole for frequencies in the lower frequency band. If the links 6, 7 are made flat as shown, they may comprise an air dielectric capacitor of a large enough value to effect the tuning. An auxiliary tuning capacitor 10 may have to be used, however, or in some cases, a tuning inductance. In constructing the aerial the loops may be spaced by insulating pillars arranged at intervals and the whole assembly mounted on an insulating base or a bracket. A resistor connected across the links may be included to broaden the tuning.
