Abstract

Metal sheet or strip, e.g. iron, steel or tinplate, is coated with a thermoplastic high polymer by forming a dispersion of the polymer in a solvent or solvent mixture immiscible or only partly miscible with water, the major part of such solvent having a boiling-point above the softening-point of the polymer and the polymer having a grain size of about 100 m or less, applying the dispersion to the metal and heating to a temperature above the softening-point so as to form a solution of the polymer, and then heating to a higher temperature to evaporate the solvent. The polymer may be polythene; a vinyl polymer; a copolymer of a vinyl and a vinylidene or acrylic compound or styrene; a polyamide; a polyacrylic compound; polystyrene; or a phenol-modified cyclohexanone resin. Possible additives include sand, titanium white, zinc white, lithopone, chrome yellow, china clay, organic pigments or dyestuffs. After applying the dispersion, e.g. by a printing-roller, there may be an initial period of heating to a temperature near the softening-point to swell the polymer.
