860,232. Nuclear fusion reactors. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Dec. 10, 1958 [Oct. 15, 1957], No. 39761/58. Divided out of 860,231. Class 39(4). In a gas discharge apparatus of the kind in which an electrically continuous high resistance liner is provided between the wall of a torus and a pulsed ring discharge induced in gas in the torus, the liner is provided with circumferential conducting means around its small circumference adapted when energized to produce a magnetic field which opposes the entry of an applied axial magnetic field into the liner. As shown in Fig. 1, the liner 1 may be corrugated and the conducting means may comprise copper rings 4 arranged in the troughs of the corrugations. The rings 4 should be coated with alumina to prevent them short-circuiting the bottom of each corrugation and to prevent sparking between them and the liner.
