Abstract

859,300. Adjusting body height; spring suspensions. ROVER CO. Ltd. May 4, 1959 [May 9, 1958], No. 14855/58. Class 108(2). In a pneumatic suspension system, rubber diaphragms 1, 6, Fig. 1, are supported by rigid collars 8, 9. On deflection of a suspension arm 4 a pedestal 3 moves into the interior of the air spring to change the volume thereof and the effective cross-sectional area of the spring. - A piston 10 may be adjusted to compensate for changes in the static load of the vehicle. Hydraulic fluid acting on a diaphragm 14, Fig. 2, may be used to adjust the height of the vehicle as the static load changes. Perforated plates 18 limit the movement of the diaphragm 14. An embodiment is described in which the diaphragm corresponding to the upper diaphragm 6 of Fig. 1 constitutes a relatively flat diaphragm without a retaining member 9. The upper part of the air spring, constituting the chamber the volume of which may be varied by the adjustable means, may be located at a distance from the lower half of the spring, the two being joined by a duct.
