Abstract
An auto-adhering silicone rubber contains from 0,015 to 0,5% (by weight of the siloxane in the rubber) of boron added as an alkyl borate prior to vulcanisation. Borates specified are methyl-, propyl-, butyl- and octadecyl-borates. The compositions used for making the rubbers comprise (a) convertible siloxanes having alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkaryl or halogenated hydrocarbon radicals, and (b) fillers, e.g. TiO2, ZnO, Al2O3, Fe2O3, SiO2 (fume, aerogel and zerogel), diatomaceous earth, crushed quartz, C black, glass fibres and powder, clay, cork P.T.F.E. and other organic resins and copper phthalocyanine, which may be treated with organosilicon compounds. Vulcanisation may be effected (1) by heating with benzoyl-, dichlorobenzoyl-, di-t-butyl- or other peroxide, (2) by mixing with combinations of alkylpolysilicates or methylhydrogensiloxanes and carboxylates, e.g. lead octoate, dibutylin-dilaurate, stannous octoate and ferric naphthenate, (3) by exposure to high energy radiation such as that derived from a Van de Graff machine or from cobalt 60, or (4), where the siloxane contains chloroalkyl radicals, by mixing with a polyamine, e.g. ethylene diamine or diethylene-triamine. In typical Examples (1) a mixture of a dimethylsiloxane gum, a liquid dimethylsiloxane, crushed quartz, propylpolysilicate, lead octoate and triethylborate, was pressed into a sheet and allowed to stand at room temperature for 24 hours. The resulting cured sheet exhibited auto-adhesion; (2) a mixture of a copolymer composed of dimethyl-, phenylmethyl- and methylvinyl-siloxane units, fume silica, a liquid hydroxylated siloxane, Fe2O3, dichlorobenzoyl peroxide and ethyl borate, was extruded in the form of a Tape and heated for 15 secs. at 330 DEG C.
