An articulated clamping ring comprises a plurality of hingedly interconnected segments 1, 2 presenting two adjacent free ends and a latching and locking mechanism mounted on one of the ends and comprising link means 11 pivotally connected to the one end and arranged to extend to the other end when the mechanism is engaged therewith, and a clamping lever 6 pivotally connected to the link means, the clamping lever having a locking projection 13 and a latching projection 7 for selective engagement in a recess 14 in the other of the ends, the locking projection 13 extending further from the pivot axis 12 of the clamping lever than the latching projection 7 and engaging the recess 14 in the locking position of the lever to hold the free ends in closely spaced relation, pivotal disengaging movement of the clamping lever 6 to disengage the locking projection 13 from the recess 14 allowing the free ends to move apart and causing the latching projection 7 to engage in the recess 14 if and when the free ends move apart, thus preventing further pivotal disengaging movement of the clamping lever until the free ends have been brought together to disengage the latching projection 7 from the recess 14. As shown, a recess 15 between the locking projection 13 and the latching projection 7 abuts the outer edge 16 of the recess 14 if the clamping lever 6 is moved towards the Fig. 3 position before the free ends move apart, and unless the links 11 are then moved clockwise about a pivot pin 10 or the clamping lever 6 is turned back to its locking position and then swung anticlockwise while preventing pivoting movement of the links 11, disengagement of the mechanism is prevented. In another arrangement, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), the clamping lever 6 is so shaped in relation to the edge 16 that the lever cannot be disengaged when the free ends of the ring segments are closely spaced, except by swinging the clamping lever anticlockwise from the locking position and then pulling it bodily outwardly from the ring segments.
