Abstract

858,924. Feeding webs. STOBB, A. R. March 10, 1959, No. 8175/59. Class 100(1) A web 11 Fig. 1, (not shown), printed by cylinders 10, is fed with constant tension by feed rollers 12, each driven through differential gearing. A shaft 32, driven by the drive to the printing cylinder, drives a carrier 38 through bevel gears 33, 34, the carrier having planetary gears 39 in mesh with a ring gear 41 attached by a ring 40 to a sleeve 28 supporting the roller 12. A constant torque electric motor 48 drives a shaft 42 through pinions 46, 47, the shatt 42 carrying a sun gear 44 meshing with the gears 39. The roller 12 is driven at a speed appropriate to produce the desired web tension. Should this tension decrease, the roller 12 is rotated, through the differential by the motor 48, at a faster rate to restore such tension. The web is held to the roller 12 by rollers 17 carried by spring urged bellcrank levers 22, or by air under pressure supplied to chambers 56, Fig. 5 (not shown), disposed around the roller periphery and sealed by spring pressed bars 58. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), one roller 12 is positioned in advance of an impression cylinder co-operating with several printing cylinders.
