Abstract
858,460. Ratchet clutches; slip couplings. NAPIER & SON Ltd.. D. Jan. 1, 1959 [Jan. 15, 1958], No. 1477/58. Class 80 (2). In an overrunning dog clutch for a turbinedriven vessel propeller shaft, wherein a sleeve 16 is helically moved with respect to a supporting driving (or driven) member 10 to engage or disengage its sawtooth dogs 21 with corresponding dogs 22 on a driven (or driving) member 11 when overrun of the members 10, 11 with respect to each other effects limited relative rotation between the sleeve 16 and the member 10 by means of a frictional drag means between the said sleeve and the member 11, the said helical movement is guided by slots 20 in the sleeve 16 engaging rollers 14 free on fixed radial posts 13 in the member 10 and driving torque is transmitted via blocks 12 integral with the member 10 which, when the dogs 21, 22 are engaged, abut sides 18 of grooves 17 in the sleeve 16 which grooves limit relative movement between the said sleeve and the member 10. The slots 20 and rollers 14 are arranged at a greater radius than the blocks 12 and grooves 17. The slots 20 are sufficiently long to ensure a clearance at all times between the rollers 14 and the closed ends of the slots. The frictional drag means comprises friction linings 29 between rings 33, 30 respectively splined to the sleeve 16 and to a sleeve 27 splined to the member 11, the ring assembly being permanently spring clamped between the faces 24, 28 respectively of the member 11 and the sleeve 27. The slots 20 are inclined in the opposite direction to that shown when the member 11 is driving.
