Abstract

858,436. Universal joints. BIRFIELD ENGINEERING Ltd. May 19, 1959 [June 5, 1958], No. 17958/58. Class 80 (2). A lubricant seal for each journal pin 2 of a Hooke's type universal joint comprises an O- ring 11 located in a circumferential groove 12 in the bearing bush 5 and engaging a machined surface on the enlarged root portion 14 of the pin. The bush 5 is retained in the yoke 4a by a circlip 6, and the shoulder formed by the enlargement 14 provides an end location for the bearing needle rollers 7, thus preventing damage to the ring 11. Holes 15, 16 are bored through the journal pins for the reception of the lubricant, closure being effected by a grubscrew 18.
