Abstract

857,922. Hydraulic transmissions. WESTON, B. April 28, 1958 [Jan. 28, 1957], No. 2977/57. Class 69 (2). The major axes of the stationary elliptical cams 6, 7 against which the spring biased rollers 8 of the pump and motor of an hydraulic transmission react, are inclined at 45 degrees to each other. A disc valve 11 is rotatable between limits by hydraulic pressure on one side or the other of vane 12. In the neutral position shown in Fig. 2, where the four slots 26 of the valve 11 are arranged so that each pump axis is cut symmetrically by two slots, the pump output is zero, since of the grooves 5 of the pump covered by any one slot 26, an equal number are decreasing in volume as are increasing. As disc valve 11 is rotated, the pump output increases from zero and the ability of the motor to absorb liquid decreases, causing an increasing motor speed. The direction of rotation of the motor depends on the direction of rotation of the disc valve 11 from its neutral position. The invention may be applied to transmissions with other types of pump and motor.
