Abstract
An epoxy resin thermoset by a curing agent in the presence of a cork material (defined) and allowing expansion to occur gives an expanded cellular product. Specified cork materials are cork, barks from Douglas fir, elm, maple and fir and balsa wood; titanium dioxide may be present as a pigment and cotton, rayon and glass fibres, asbestos and rock wool as fillers. Epoxy resins specified are the diepoxide of diethylene glycol bisdihydro di p cyclo-pentadienyl ether; the reaction products of polyepoxides such as di epoxy butadiene or bis (2,3 epoxy-2methyl propyl) ether with aromatic polyhydric phenols; and the reaction products of epi chlorhydin with resorcinol, p, p1-(dihydroxy)biphenyl, phenol-formaldehyde resins, with bis phenols in which the phenolic nuclei are joined by -O- or by alkylene radicals and of which a large number are listed and bis-phenol A is preferred, or with aliphatic polyols, e.g. triethylene-, 1, 4-butylene-, hexamethylene, or octaethylene glycols, glycerol and sorbitol. The epoxy resins may be mixed with mono-epoxides such as allyl or phenyl glycidyl ethers, glycidyl benzene, styrene oxide or 2-hydroxyethyl glycidyl ethers. Curing agents specified are BF3, phenolic or urea-formaldehyde resins, polysulphide or polybutene rubbers, polyamides derived from ethylene diamine and dimerized linoleic acid and dimerized linseed oil, benzyl dimethylamine, N, N diethyl ethylene diamine, ethylene or phenylene diamine, diethylene triamine, triethylene tetramine and N-hydroxyethyl-diethylene triamine; particularly preferred are mixtures of polyamides with aliphatic polyamines. Examples are given. The product may be used for the normal wide variety of porous product applications.ALSO:An epoxy-resin thermoset by a curing agent in the presence of a cork material (defined) and allowing expansion to occur gives an expanded cellular product. Specified curing agents are boron trifluoride amino, amides and phenolic resins, whilst cotton and rayon fibres, asbestos, rock wool and glass fibres may be present as fillers.
