Abstract

857,519. Land mines. SOC. VALMARA S.r.L. Aug. 2,1957 [Aug. 3, 1956], No. 24616/57. Classes 9(1) and 9(2). A land mine adapted to explode above the ground comprises a base 1 fixed in the ground and containing a propelling charge 10 to eject the casing 2 containing the explosive charge 4 together with a detonator 3 and a striker 6 carried by a plunger 5. The plunger is secured to the base 1 by a coil of string 9 embedded in the propellant 10 and is surrounded by a spring 7. Mounted in an axial passage through the plunger is a percussion cap 11 and a delay fuze 12. Pressure on the cap 11 initiates the cap to fire the fuze 12, the flash from which passes through openings 14, 141 to ignite the propellant. The pressure developed drives the casing 2 upwards unwinding the string 9. When the string is fully extended, further upward motion of the plunger is prevented, but the surrounding casing and charge 4 continue to move upwards until the detonator 3 hits the striker 6 and so. explodes the mine. Spring 7 serves to hold the striker 6 away from the detonator until the plunger reaches its maximum height.
