Class 82(2) Apparatus for separating solid materials into three fractions based on specific gravity comprises a downwardly tapering vessel, materials to be separated and a liquid suspension of lower specific gravity being supplied at one side near the top of the vessel while liquid of higher specific gravity is supplied at another side into the lower part of the vessel, the light fraction being removed from the upper part of the vessel and the middle and heavy fractions being removed by adjacent collecting devices. As shown, the separation vessel is bounded by walls 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. walls 2, 3 and 4 also surrounding wheel 8 which constitutes a conventional device for the separate removal of the middle and heavy fractions. The liquid of lighter specific gravity is supplied to the separation vessel from pipes 38 in wall 7 while the denser liquid is supplied via pipes 39 and overflows into pipe 40, the level of the denser liquid being controllable by means of weir 44 in tank 41. Coal may be supplied to the vessel on the same side as inlets 38 and the floats product is carried over the top of wall 5 from which the portion equivalent to 7c of wall 7 is omitted. The middles which float on the interface of the two liquids are carried towards wheel 8 and pass over wall 9 into annular rotating trough 22 from which they are discharged through aperture 15, and the heavies are carried by the stream of liquid emerging from outlets 39 into annulus 34 from which they are discharged through aperture 30.
