Abstract

Olefins having 2 to 4 carbon atoms are polymerized by the low-pressure polymerization process using a two-component catalyst comprising a compound of a lower valency state of a metal of Group IVa, Va or VIa and an organometallic compound of an alkali metal, alkaline earth metal or rare earth metal, and incorporating less than 8 mol per cent. of water based on the Group IVa-VIa metal compound. It is preferred that 0,5-5 mol per cent of water is present. A dispersing agent e.g. aliphatic hydrocarbons, may also be present and the water may be added mixed with the dispersing agent, with the monomers or with the metal compound, the preferred one of which is titanium trichloride, while diethyl aluminium chloride is also specified. Ethylene is the specified olefin. Specification 828,201 is referred to.
