Abstract

856,725. Milling-cutter arbors. FREEMAN, H., and SPENDLOVE, E. H. Oct. 22, 1958 [Dec. 13, 1957; April 11, 1958], Nos. 38924/57 and 11604/58. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXIV] In a force-transmitting device of piston-andcylinder type, a chamber 20, Fig. 2, having two or more openings closed by pressure-pads 24, 25, which form the force-applying or force-receiving members, is filled with a solid member of rubber, plastic or other material having substantially the properties of a liquid. The pad 24 is actuated through.a ball 23 by a screw 22, and the pad 25, which is of larger diameter, engages a number of push-rods 27 actuating an end-cap 28 which is slidable on the body 19 of the device. The interior of the body 19 is flared, as shown, to connect the small and large-diameter bores therein. In use as a screw-clamp for the cutters on the arbor of a milling-machine, the rods 27 slide in bores in a collar 26, which is secured in the body 19 and has an internal thread for fitting on to the arbor so that as the screw 22 is turned, the cap 28 is forced against the spacing collars abutting the cutters. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), the interior of the body 19 is shaped to provide four smalldiameter axial passages opening into the bore containing the pad 25, each passage having a separate screw-actuated pressure-pad. By screwing-up the four screws, the pad 25 may thus be moved through four times the distance of the Fig. 2 arrangement. In a further modification, each rod 27, Fig. 6, engages a pad 56 engaging one of four rubber or like members 54, which themselves engage a common rubber or like member 53 engaged by a screw-actuated pad 52. The actuating-screws shown may be replaced by screwed flanged rings. The Specification also describes an arrangement wherein a rubber or like member separates two equaldiameter pressure-pads mounted in a cylindrical casing, Fig. 1 (not shown), and an arrangement wherein a rubber or like member 40, Fig. 3, extending between two coaxial pressure-pads 34, 35, of different diameters, is engaged laterally by a second rubber or like member 39 in a transverse bore containing an actuating pressure-pad 33. According to the second Provisional Specification the rubber or like member may be replaced by oil.
