Abstract

In an example, a 10 % wt solution of ethyl anthraquinone in a mixture of 40 parts by volume of benzene and 60 parts by volume of diisobutyl carbinol is hydrogenated at 30 DEG C. in the presence of a suspended hydrogenation catalyst such as Raney nickel or palladium on a carrier until 50% of the quinone has been reduced to the corresponding hydroquinone: some of the liquid is then withdrawn from the reaction zone through a filter positioned therein whilst a quantity of fresh solution equal to that removed is added. 50 alternating pulsations per minute are applied by means of a filter pump to the liquid being withdrawn in such manner that 1/3 of the liquid passing out of the reaction zone through the filter is returned therethrough, thus keeping the filter clear of suspended particles.ALSO:In conducting a reaction involving a liquid containing a suspended solid wherein some of the liquid is continuously withdrawn from the reaction zone through a filter positioned therein and fresh reactant liquid is continuously added to the reaction zone, an alternating pulsating movement of liquid through the filter is established at 1-500 pulses/minute, whereby a part of the liquid thus withdrawn is periodically returned to the reaction zone through the filter, which is thereby kept clear of solid particles. The suspended solid may be a catalyst used for hydrogenating a substituted anthraquinone in an inert solvent e.g. Raney-nickel or palladium on a carrier (see Group IV(b)). A number of embodiments is described and illustrated: for instance in Fig. 3 liquid <PICT:0856331/III/1> from the reactor 34 is withdrawn by pump 32 through filter 33 into line 35 containing valve 36 on the suction stroke. On the pressure stroke the liquid is expelled through line 37 containing valve 38 except when reducing valve 52 is periodically opened. A further valve may be installed in line 37 thus controlling the quantity of liquid returned through the filter. A stirrer 53 is preferably provided in the reactor. Preferably the particle size of the catalyst is 0.001-0.833 mm. and 20-70% of the filtered liquid is returned through the filter.
