856,305. Screw and nut gearing. RESEARCH ENGINEERS Ltd. Feb. 27, 1959 [Dec. 3, 1957], No. 37681/57. Class 80 (3). In re-circulating ball-type screw and nut gearing the helical groove in one member 1, Fig. 1, is of V cross-section and preferably of Whitworth form while the groove in the other member 2 is of arcuate or elliptical cross-section the radius of curvature being slightly in excess of that of the balls. The inclination C of the line of thrust B, A is always constant and passes through the centre of the balls irrespective of variations in the diameters of screw and nut. The apex of the V groove provides a clearance for lubricant and a clearance 5 is also provided in the other groove. Two nuts may be carried on a movable part 6 of a machine tool by spherical seating members 8 and one may be loaded by springs 9 to take up backlash. The nuts are held in position by screws 10, one of which serves to adjust the compression of the springs 9.
