Abstract

856,173. Screwdrivers. SWAYNE, S. G. Sept. 22, 1959 [Sept. 24, 1958], No. 30465/58. Class 61. A screwholding screwdriver com prises a tubular casing 1, a mair bit 2 displaceable axially but held against rotation and an auxiliary bit 4 located in an axial hole or groove in the main bit, the auxiliary bit being fast with a block through which extends a transverse pin 6 which engages in a helical slot 7 in the casing.The arrangement is such that inward displacement of the bit structure after engagement with a screw head, effects a partial rotation of the block and imparts a twist to the auxiliary bit until it jambs in the slot of the screw head. The bit 2 is slotted longitudinally for engagement by two balls 3 located in recesses in the casing. A spacer block or blocks 9 are disposed between the block carrying the pin 6 and the inner end of the bit 2. A compression spring 8 acting upon the block urges the bit to a forwardly projected position with its tip co-extensive with that of the main bit.
