Abstract

The hardening of epoxide resins by the usual polycarboxylic acids, amines, &c., is accelerated by the addition of 1-2% by weight (based on the combined weight of resin and hardener) of an organic sulphur compound which is not a vulcanisation accelerator for rubber and in which the sulphur is not a member of a ring and which contains at least one mercaptan sulphide, or sulphoxide group, e.g. monothioglycol, dithioglycol, b -thiodiglycol, thiodiglycollic acid diethyl ester, diphenyl sulphide, thiophenyl-2-carboxylic acid, or dimethyl sulphoxide. The accelerators reduce both hardening times and temperatures. They may be used with casting resins, coating compositions or adhesives. Conventional additives, e.g. silica, dyestuffs, pigments, plasticisers, reinforcing materials or other resins may be included. Various phenol which may be used for making the epoxy resins are mentioned and many known hardeners for the resins are listed. Comparative examples illustrate the accelerating effect of b -thiodiglycol or mixtures of the diglycidyl ether of 4, 41-dioxy-diphenyl-dimethyl-methane with phthalic or maleic anhydride and with hexamethylene tetramine.
