855,769. Assembling electrical components on circuit bases. SYLVANIA ELECTRIC PRODUCTS Inc. Oct. 22, 1957 [Oct. 22, 1956], No. 32976/57. Class 83 (2). In assembling with circuit bases 20 electrical components 22 each having a body and solder lugs depending from the body, the lowermost component of a stack of oriented components is repeatedly pushed from beneath the stack to form a line of components in a side-by-side arrangement, the line as whole moving away from the stack at each pushing operation, the component furthest in the line from the stack is grasped between successive pushing operations from above and by a holding head, the head and component grasped thereby are moved downwardly to a circuit base and the component is slid from the head to insert the lugs into apertures in the base. Circuit bases 20, e.g. printed circuit bases, are carried by conveyer rails 18 and valve sockets 22 are carried in slots in an indexing turret 24, Fig. 2A, for supplying a drop slide 26 from which the sockets are extracted by a device 28 and fed side-bv-side over a track 33 to a trap 32. The socket on the trap is picked up by a collet 34 carried by a rod 38 and is moved down through the trap, placed against the base and is slid from the collet by the rod 38 and held until an anvil 40, Fig. 2B, spreads a centre-shield 41 on the socket to hold it in place. The sockets have tapered bodies, an indexing slot 163, Fig. 9, and locating nubs 167 and are loaded in slots in the turret. The turret is indexed by a cylinder 42, operated when photo-electric sensing-means 46 detects that the slot over the slide 26 is empty, to move a full slot over the slide. The stack of sockets in the slide 26, each socket being oriented by a rib on the slide entering the slot 163, is supported by fingers 93, Fig. 6, on a slide 95 when the rod 38 and collet 34 are in the normal raised position and as the rod is lowered cams 91 carried by the rod engage links 97 to move the slide so that its fingers 93 no longer support the stack but a tongue 99 thereon enters between the last and penultimate sockets to hold the stack and cause the last socket to drop on to the track 33 side-by-side with other sockets where an upstanding rib enters between the lugs on the sockets to orient the sockets. Further linkage causes simultaneous rearward movement of a block 110 carrying a pusher 112. When the rod 38 moves upwardly the slide is returned and the pusher is caused to move forwardly to push the sockets along the track, the last socket being positioned on the trap 32 beneath the collet. The collet is mounted on the rod 38 which is connected by linkage to a floating pneumatic cylinder 44 and springs 60 surround pins 58 on a flange 59 of the collet which engage holes in the flange 62 fixed to the rod and carrying the cams 91. The rod 38 and collet are moved downwardly, the latter engaging the socket on the trap which latter is opened by the lower surface of the collet and a finger on the collet engages the slot 163 in the socket. The socket is carried to the circuit base when the collet is stopped by engagement of the flange 59 with a stop 87. The rod 38 continues its downward movement and an extension 37 thereon slides the socket out of the collet. The relative movement of collet and rod 38 stops when the flange 62 engages a sleeve above the flange 59. The floating cylinder then causes movement of an anvil 40 against a biasing spring 75, through linkage, which upsets the centre shield of the socket beneath the base. The anvil is then lowered and the rod and collet raised through the trap which is closed by its springs. A spring-urged arm 128 near the trap associated with a switch will prevent operation of the cylinder 44 and light lamp if the arm does not engage an area adjacent the slot 163 of the socket. Although the holding head is shown as a collet it may comprise vacuum or mechanical locking means. The holding and inserting assembly comprising the collet assembly, guide track 33 and slide 26 are rotatably adjustable on the frame of the machine. Specification 807,796 is referred to.
