Abstract
855,420. Storing fissile materials. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. July 17, 1957 [July 30, 1956], No. 23522/56. Class 39(4). [Also in Group XX] A container for storing fissile material under sub-critical conditions is filled with a cellular structure incorporating neutron moderating and neutron absorbing material arranged so that the cells are filled and drained with the filling and draining of the container. As shown in Fig. 1, the cells 3 are arranged vertically and are of hexagonal cross-section ; the cell structure is supported on a grid 5 so as to leave a free space below the cells. In another construction, Fig. 3 (not shown), the container is packed randomly with short open-ended tubes. The neutron absorbing material may be a mixture of rare earths sandwiched between layers of polyethylene which acts as the neutron moderator ; alternatively a ceramic having neutron moderating characteristics may be impregnated with a neutron absorber.
