855,418. Motor vehicle transmissions. JOHNSON (MACHINERY) Ltd., C. H. Sept. 7, 1959 [Sept. 10, 1958], No. 28992/58. Class 79(2). The drive shaft and driven axle of a vehicle, especially a dumper, are connected by a flat rubber or like resilient belt having a long steel helical cord embedded in it to take the driving tension, and a series of transversely arranged teeth or ribs to engage corresponding recesses in the driving and driven pulleys which are mounted on their corresponding shafts and partly supported on a common, rigid, non-flexing element on the vehicle chassis. A pulley 5 is splined to the output shaft 1 of a dumper drive unit and is partly mounted upon roller bearings 6 upon a stub shaft 7 attached to a rigid casing 8. A larger pulley 14 is coupled to a flange of the driven axle 3 of the vehicle and is also mounted upon a bearing 16 carried by a stub shaft 17 attached to the casing 8. The pulleys 5 and 14 are coupled by the driving belt 18 and the casing 8 is attached to the vehicle at 20.
