Abstract

A grease composition comprises one or more liquid lubricants as defined below and, as a thickener therefor, a minor proportion of a silica (of particle size not greater than 100 mm ) which has previously been treated with a cyclic organopolysiloxane. The liquid lubricants employed are liquids of viscosity not greater than 5000 cs. at 100 DEG C., having lubricating properties, and selected from mineral oils, halogenated paraffins, liquid organopolysiloxanes and polyglycols. The treated silica may be prepared by heating together in a closed system the silica and the cyclic organopolysiloxane, for example at temperatures up to 250 DEG C. The grease composition may also contain stabilizers (e.g. triethylene glycol, succinic acid or mannitol), antioxidants or viscosity index improvers. In the examples, fume silica is mixed with octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane and stored at 25 DEG C. for 6 weeks. The treated silica is then used to thicken trimethylsilyl end-blocked dimethylpolysiloxane, trimethylsilyl end-blocked polymethylphenylsiloxane or trimethylsilyl end-blocked polychlorphenylmethylsiloxane. The effect is described of replacing the treated silica with untreated silica or with silica which has been esterified on the surface with butanol.
