In a construction comprising a rail mounted longitudinally on the surface of a girder a pad of natural or synthetic rubber is provided between the rail and the girder surface and the rail is pressed on to the pad by forcing a portion of each of a plurality of spring clips, arranged on both sides of the rail and overlapping the rail flange, on to the rail flange. The pads are the same width as the rail flange and may extend the whole length of the rail or a number of separate pads may be used along the rail length. In the latter case the pads are arranged at the points where the clips operate. The pads are about “ inch thick and diminish slightly in thickness from the centre portion to the edges. A plurality of grooves are formed in both the upper and lower faces of the pads. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1 the shallow V- shaped grooves are arranged in both faces in staggered relationship, three grooves being provided in one face and two in the other. In a modification shown in Fig. 2 shallow V-shaped grooves are provided in one face and a plurality of semi-circular grooves 3 in the other. In the initial stage a small loading produces a large increment of compression of the pads until a certain point is reached and at this point a large load produces a relatively small increment of compression of the pads. The spring clips holding the rail to the girder are pre-loaded in order to compress the pads to the point where a large load produces a small increment of compression. Oil sealing ridges 2 are provided close to the edges of the pads on one or both faces. The pads may be made of natural rubber with a coating. of synthetic rubber. Specifications 775,869 and 842,600 are referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification, 786,483.
