Abstract

853,002. Making screws; rolling screw threads. GENERAL AMERICAN TRANSPORTATION CORPORATION. May 12, 1958 [March 12, 1958], No. 15190/58. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXV] A method of making headed screws in which the threads are formed up to the plane of the underface of the screw head comprises forming an annular cavity 9 in the underface of the head of the screw blank 1, adjacent to the juncture of the shank 2 and the head 3, and thereafter rolling the shank between thread-rolling dies so as to produce full threads adjacent to the head while displacing excess material 11 from the shank into the annular cavity. The rolling dies have their upper corners unrelieved so as to ensure complete formation of the screw threads 4 up to the underside 5 of the head 3 and to cause axial displacement of any excess material along the shank and within the cavity 9.
