Abstract

852,124. Jacking motor vehicles. BUTTERWORTH, A. J. March 23, 1959 [March 24, 1958], No. 9433/58. Class 79(3). In a hydraulically operated jacking or parking mechanism wherein a hydraulic ram on each side of a vehicle is connected through a valve mechanism to a pump driven by the vehicle engine, the valve mechanism comprises detent means which are released only when the vehicle is stationary or travelling at slow speed and means are provided for automatically cutting off communication between the ram and the pump when the engine stops. The valve comprises. ports 11, 12, 13 and 14 and spool 29, the port 11 being connected to a fluid reservoir 7 and inlet of the pump 5. The outlet of the pump 5 is connected to port 13 and port 12 is connected to the hydraulic ram cylinders 36. Port 14 is connected to the reservoir 7, through a filter 35. In the position shown in Fig. 1, the pump is energizing the hydraulic ram through 13 and 12, ports 11 and 14 being cut off. Movement of the valve spool to the right, Fig. 3, connects 11 to 12 and 13 to 14 allowing the pump to short circuit through the reservoir. The spool is normally held in the latter position by engagement of a detent 22 with a groove 23. The detent may be retracted by an electromagnet 25 which is energized by a switch which may only be closed when the engine is in a low or reverse gear-dependent upon the position of the change speed lever or selector. When the detent is withdrawn the valve spool is operated manually through a cable connection to the facia panel. The cylindrical portion 19 of the valve spool is smaller than the portions 20 and 21 and when the spool is in the position whereby the pump is operating the ram, the pressure difference due to the differing diameters holds the spool in the operating position against the pressure of a retaining spring 31, in which position it will remain until the engine stops or the spool is manually returned. Sealing rings 33 and 34 are provided. The hydraulic ram mechanism may comprise one or a pair of ground engaging rollers, Figs. 5 and 8, and may comprise a roller 47, Fig. 4, engaging a rim 48 of a driven wheel and through which and a pair of bevel gears, the drive may be transmitted to the ground engaging roller. Specifications 832,679 and 842,331 are referred to.
