Abstract
Polymers, copolymers or terpolymers of formula R1 R2 C=C R3 R4 where R1, R2, R3 and R4 are hydrogen, saturated or unsaturated linear, branched or cyclic hydrocarbon radicals, heterocyclic radicals, halogen-substituted radicals or polar atoms or groups such as halogen atoms or ester, ether or -CN groups are prepared using as the catalyst system boron trialkyls with between 0,001 and 0,2% of oxygen and 0,001 and 2% of water, both based on the monomer(s). Specified monomers are ethylene, propylene, butylene, isoolefins, dienes, styrene and derivatives thereof substituted in the aromatic ring, tri and tetra chloro and fluoro ethylenes, vinyl and vinylidene chlorides and fluorides, tri-fluorochloroethylene, vinyl acetate, vinyl ethers, esters of acrylic and methacrylic acids and their halogen substitution products, allyl halides and esters, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile and N-vinyl pyridine. The polymerization may take place in bulk or in an inert organic medium.
