In a compandor system, the modulated signal sidebands are used, by filtering, amplification and rectification, to vary an attenuator 4 in the modulating signal input circuit to the modulator 5 at the transmitter 1, and correspondingly at the receiver 2 the received signal sidebands control a variable attenuator 9 in the output circuit of the demodulator 7.
