Abstract

Lacquers based on polyvinyl chloride may be prevented from yellowing as a result of exposure to light by including 0,5 to 2% by weight based on the solids content of the biphenyl lactone 9-oxa-9, 10-dihydrophenanthrene-10-one, and lacquers based on polyisoamyl methacrylate may be inhibited from undesired polymerization on exposure to light by including 0,5% by weight of the compound.ALSO:Material, e.g. textile fabric, is protected against the deteriorating effect of light by applying a coating (by brushing or spraying) of an organic solution or aqueous suspension of 9-oxa- 9, 10-dihydrophenanthrene- 10- one.ALSO:Material and coatings or colourings applied thereto such as paint or dye is protected against the deteriorating effects of light by applying thereto a coating containing 9-oxa-9,10 dihydrophenanthrene-10-one, or incorporating the compound in the material. Paper or cloth may be coated by brushing or spraying with an organic solution or aqueous dispersion of the compound. The compound may also be dissolved in the solvents used for making lacquers from polyvinyl chloride or poly-iso-amyl methacrylate. Alternatively, a coating of the ammonium salt of 2-hydroxy-21-biphenyl-carboxylic acid may be converted into the protective compound by heating in situ.
