Abstract

The configuration of the end closure 136, 138, 140, 142, 144 minimizes the forces exerted on the weld. The closure also has strengthening ribs 122 and 124. The paperboard body may be lined with thermoplastics material or may be unlined. The spin welding apparatus includes heating means 163, eg a quartz heater, infrared heater, electrical resistance heater, flame heater, radio frequency generator microwave generator, ultrasonic generator, electric arc generator, steam generator or catalytic heater, which preheats the friction welding zone of the component with the higher melt temperature (eg the end closure). A first mandrel 28 is inserted into the container body part, the mandrel having radially expandable portions to cause the body part to be expanded to a cylindrical configuration of predetermined diameter. A second mandrel holds and can rotate the end closure, the mandrels being axially movable towards each other. Heat is also applied while the second mandrel is being rotated. <IMAGE>
